To know or to know

In the English of the King James it is sometimes difficult to decide, if “to know” has to be translated with “wissen” or with “erkennen”. In German this difference requires the two different translations.

The Strong’s info gives the hint on how to deal with translating “know”. Take a look in the Strong’s explanation and you will see the difference clearly.

Strong’s G1492 has to be translated to “wissen” oder “kennen”

while

String’s G1097 translates to “erkennen”.

In 1. John 5.20 you find even a sentence with G1492 and G1097 both in use and in the KJV translated to “know” on both occasions.
